DETROIT, June 10 - A former president of the United Auto Workers, Gary Jones, was sentenced to 28 months in jail on Thursday for embezzling union money as part of a greater federal investigation into corruption in the union.

Jones, who pleaded guilty last June to charges he embezzled more than $1 million, appeared in the U.S. District Court in Detroit on Thursday. At the hearing of the year last, he apologized to the UAW members for their betrayal of trust and asked forgiveness.
