According to a person familiar with the matter, Microsoft Corp. and the video game chat company Discord Inc. have ended takeover talks.
Discord now focused on a private listing, said the person, asking not to be identified because the matter is potential public.
A Microsoft representative declined to comment on Discord, a Microsoft representative could not immediately be reached for comment. Discord, San Francisco, is best known for its free service that lets gamers communicate by video, voice and text.
People who have been stuck in homes during the pandemic have increasingly used its technology for study groups, dance classes, book clubs and other virtual gatherings. Bloomberg previously reported that the companies were in talks about a deal, but that Discord was more likely to do an initial public offering than be sold.
Discord also held discussions with Amazon.com Inc. and Epic Games Inc. in the past, people familiar with the matter have said. The Wall Street Journal had previously reported that the sales talks had ended.
Microsoft remains active in the deals front: Earlier this month it said it would buy the speech recognition pioneer Nuance Communications Inc. in an all-cash deal valued at$ 19.6 billion.
