More than half of British adults visit porn site in 2020

In 2020, around half of British adults visited a pornographic website or app, a year in which the COVID pandemic causes more activity of all kinds to shift online, media regulator Ofcom said on Wednesday.

About 26 million Britons visited adult website or app in September 2020, the biggest being Pornhub, attracting around a third of the online adults, representing half of all British men and 16% of British women, Ofcom said in its annual survey of the nation's online habits.

Ofcom said it started studying adult content as part of its new duty to regulate UK-based video-sharing platforms and as it prepared to take over responsibilities for online safety.

In the last year, internet use arose when lock downs imposed to curb the coronavirus can create jobs for work, education, socialising, entertainment and shopping, the survey showed.

The average time spent online on smartphones, tablets and computers increased to 3 hours and 37 minutes a day, nine minutes over 20 minutes on 2019 and is more than one hour shorter than in Germany and France and 30 minutes more than Spain.

Another 1 hour and 21 minutes were spent watching services such as BBC iPlayer or Netflix on TV sets, Ofcom said.

As of October 9 (the survey) appeared on most adult TV websites and apps, and by 93% of the three - 4 year-olds, the British study showed.

Young adults were the biggest users of social video, with 18 - 24 s spending an average of 1 hour 16 minutes per day in YouTube in September, an increase of 11 minutes since 2019.

Aber its rival TikTok, a YouTube video sharing social media site, saw the biggest jump in both the use and usage during the pandemic.

Its users rose from 3 million in September 2019 to 14 million by March 2021, while 18-24 s more than doubled the time spent on the platform in the year to September 2020, rising from 17 minutes to 38 minutes.
