U.S. Supreme Court clears way for media consolidation

On Thursday the Federal Communication Commission cleared the way for the U.S. Supreme Court to loosen local ownership restrictions and handing over a victory to broadcasters in a ruling that could facilitate industry consolidation as consumers move online increasingly.

In a unanimous ruling, the Justices overturned a lower court decision that blocked the 2017 FCC's removal of some media ownership rules for failing to consider the effects on ownership by racial minorities and women. Critics of the industry have said further consolidation could limit the choice of media for consumers.
