While Walgreens will let customers schedule Covid-19 vaccine appointments at nearby Uber Technologies Inc. pharmacies in the U.S. through the app, a program that reflects the importance of Inoculations to the ride-hailing industry.
After booking a shot on Wednesday through the app, customers can then schedule transportation to and from the pharmacy.It will make the same for a follow-up appointment at Walgreens locations that show vaccines requiring two shots.
The initiative extends an existing arrangement between the nation's second app for rides and the largest pharmacy chain in the nation.WalgreensWalgreens Boots Alliance Inc. began offering free and discounted rides to Walgreens vaccine clinics, looking to vaccinate essential workers and accelerate distribution.The Uber introduced a similar program for some drivers in Puerto Rico this month.
In the last year, the pandemic has decimated ride demand for the general population.In recent weeks, these numbers have begun to bounce back as the vaccination rates have increased and normal activities are returning.According to Bloomberg Vaccine Tracker, more than a billion doses of vaccine were administered globally and over 230 million of these have been given to U.S. participants in the United States.
The second-largest ride-hailing provider Anthem Inc. said last year that it would provide 60 million rides to and from vaccine sites in low income, uninsured communities through an arrangement with LyftLyft Inc. JPMorgan Chase Co. and United Way.Later, Lyft teamed with YMCA and CVS Health Corp. in order to reach more people.
