Museveni Appoints Son as Uganda's New Chief of Defence Forces

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has appointed his son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as the new Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). Kainerugaba, a 48-year-old general, is widely regarded as his father's successor and has previously sparked controversy with threats to invade neighboring Kenya.

Kainerugaba replaces Gen Wilson Mbasu Mbadi, who has been reassigned as Minister of State for Trade. In 2022, Museveni removed his son as commander of Uganda's land forces following his threats against Kenya on social media.

Kainerugaba has long been seen as a potential successor to his father, who has ruled Uganda for nearly 40 years. Despite laws prohibiting serving military officers from political involvement, Kainerugaba has engaged in political debates and formed a pressure group to mobilize support, drawing criticism from opponents.

Uganda's next presidential election is scheduled for early 2026, and Museveni is expected to seek re-election. Kainerugaba has been serving as his father's senior presidential advisor in charge of special operations.

In related appointments, Lt Gen Samuel Okiding has been named deputy CDF, replacing Gen Peter Elwelu, who has been appointed as a senior advisor to the President. Maj Gen Jackson Bakasumba has replaced Maj Gen Leopold Eric Kyanda as Joint Chief of Staff. Brig Gen David Mugisha has been promoted to Major General and appointed commander of the Special Forces Command. Commando Brigade commander Asaph Nyakyikuru has been promoted to Brigadier General.
