Ketraco's New Power Line and Substation to Enhance Electricity Supply in Nyanza and Nairobi

The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) has awarded a contract worth Sh697 million to Elemelech Engineering (Kenya) Limited for the construction of a 69-kilometer high-voltage power line connecting Sondu and Ndhiwa in western Kenya. The 132-kilovolt line is expected to be completed within 12 months.

This transmission line will provide an alternative route for power distribution to Homa Bay, Migori, and Kisii counties, reducing the load on the existing line that also serves Kericho, Nyamira, and Bomet. The completion of this line will significantly improve electricity supply in Nyanza, where consumers have faced load shedding during peak hours due to high demand.

In a separate development, Ketraco has commissioned the 220/66kV Kimuka substation transmission line in Nairobi. This line is part of the Nairobi ring and associated substations project, which aims to provide an alternative power supply path to the Nairobi region. The project is expected to enhance access to affordable electricity and improve system efficiency.
