Bluesfest Begins Amidst Festival Cancellations and Industry Challenges

Byron Bay's Bluesfest commenced a day after the cancellation of Splendour in the Grass. Despite the festival's resilience, attendance remained below pre-COVID levels, according to director Peter Noble. He attributed this to the impact of international music tours on the local festival industry.

Noble expressed concern over the cancellation of Splendour in the Grass, calling it a "tragedy" and urging government support for the Australian music industry. The festival's cancellation followed the announcement of its lineup, which included headliner Kylie Minogue.

Bluesfest has also faced challenges, including a COVID-19 scare that forced its closure in 2021. However, Noble believes the festival's success is partly due to its older demographic, as people under 30 typically have less disposable income.

Despite attendance being 20% lower than pre-COVID levels, Bluesfest is expected to attract 80,000 attendees and generate over $200 million for New South Wales. The festival also provides employment for over 2,100 workers and 700 performers.

While young people may be hesitant to spend on festivals, Byron Bay Chamber of Commerce president Matt Williamson remains optimistic about the festival season, citing the strong headline act of Kylie Minogue. Splendour in the Grass had a significant economic impact on Byron Bay, particularly during the quieter winter period.
