NSW Police Reverse Decision to Hire Journalist as Media Director

The New South Wales Police Force has reversed its decision to hire veteran journalist Steve Jackson as its media director. The announcement comes just two weeks after Jackson was appointed to the six-month contract.

The previous media director departed earlier this month, prompting questions about the hiring process and the involvement of Police Minister Yasmin Catley's office. Catley denied allegations of improper interference, stating that her office and the commissioner's office routinely discuss such matters.

Commissioner Karen Webb sought advice from Catley's chief of staff due to his previous experience in the media industry. Jackson was set to begin his role in April, but his contract has now been terminated.

NSW Police cited the need to avoid "external distractions" as the reason for the decision. The statement emphasized that the Executive Director of the Public Affairs Branch must be able to fulfill their duties without media scrutiny. The current arrangements for the role will remain in place for the time being.
