A Rising Trend with Potential Risks and Considerations for Women Seeking a Healthier Pregnancy

Rise in Use of Weight-Loss Drugs Before Pregnancy

The use of weight-loss medications is increasing, including among women hoping to improve their health and reduce pregnancy complications. Dr. Ilana Ramer Bass, an expert in weight management, highlights the risks associated with obesity during pregnancy, such as miscarriages, birth defects, and complications during labor.

These medications offer a tool for women to achieve a healthier weight before conception. However, the FDA advises against their use during pregnancy, and there is no data supporting their use after conception.

Popular weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro were initially developed for diabetes management, while others like Wegovy and Zepbound are specifically designed for weight management. While effective, these medications can cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea.

Dr. Bass recommends stopping these medications two to three months before attempting conception to allow for their elimination from the body. In case of accidental pregnancy while on these medications, immediate discontinuation is advised.

While weight-loss medications can be beneficial for individuals with specific needs, concerns have been raised about their use for purely aesthetic purposes. Dr. Bass emphasizes that these medications should be reserved for individuals with obesity or type 2 diabetes who can truly benefit from them.
